McCain flops on confederate flag
Published April 9th, 2007 in Uncategorized.First there was the confederate flag flip.
Now there’s the confederate flag flop.
Last night on 60 minutes John McCain flipped flopped back to his original stance on the confederate flag saying that it is “a very offensive symbol.â€
McCain said that he was wrong to say it’s “strictly a state issue clearly knowing that it wasn’t.â€
Our question is – since it’s not strictly a state issue, which makes it some sort of national issue, as President of the United States would John McCain demand that the flag be taken off the Statehouse grounds?
Our next question is – As President, what other issues is John McCain going to nationalize and what is his definition of ’state’s rights?’
McCain said he was pressured into pretty much lying about how he felt on the issue because of “ambition.”
The interview:
REPORTER: by 2004, McCain moved on to a tight embrace of the president. He supported making permanent the tax cuts that he once opposed, and he’s the president’s most important ally on Iraq. Let me bring up another issue that surrounded South Carolina in the year 2000. There was a political issue, a local issue about whether the confederate flag should fly over the capitol. You waffled on that.
MCCAIN: yes, worse than waffled.
REPORTER: what do you mean?
MCCAIN: well, I said that it was strictly a state issue and clearly knowing that it wasn’t.
REPORTER: that’s not what you believed in your heart.
MCCAIN: no.
REPORTER: what did you believe in your heart?
MCCAIN: that it was a symbol to many of… A very offensive symbol to many, many Americans.
REPORTER: why didn’t you say that?
MCCAIN: I’m sure for all the wrong reasons.
REPORTER: and those wrong reasons would be what, sir?
SEN. MCCAIN: for ambition.
REPORTER: for ambition.
MCCAIN: of course. Sure.
REPORTER: was it ambition this week that caused him to be in this show in Baghdad, or worry that the American audience is leaving the theater even as e bush administration is rewriting the script?

John, you are totally incorrect. The Confederate Flag is a state issue. It has been handled. Butt out. You will not win any points in South Carolina on that issue. It is a non starter.
WAR
McCain is wrong on the Confederate Flag. It is an issue for those of us who have a long ancesterial connection to South Carolina. The Confederate Flag is not about Slavery. It is about the ties which bound together those states who resisted the domination of the Northern States in commerce. Yes, slavery was morally wrong, but it was an acceptable custom from Biblical times forward.
I believe the Confederate Flag issue is promoted by persons and organizations which want to take advantage of the emotions of the Black community. Many Blacks lament about their ancestors being slaves, but they are much better off than their counterparts which are still in Africa.
I supported McCain when he ran against Bush in 2000 because I mistakenly believed in his supposed “strait talk”. He has demonstraited that he is another “say anything” politician in order to get elected. I believe he, like Bush, is a disaster for this country. I believe his support of Bush should be considered as treason.
As for South Carolinains, I believe the Europeans were right when they said “Yankee Go Home”. Transplants to South Carolina are, in many cases, not ingrained with the “Bible Belt” mentality concered with morality which existed some years ago.
