[UPDATES IN BOLD]

Mitt Romney today blew out the other top two candidates in the Greenville County Republican Party Presidential Straw Poll.

Romney received 132 votes of 441 cast.  Giuliani received 55 and McCain only 17..

Huckabee showed a surprisingly strong finish with 111 votes while Duncan Hunter finished 3rd with 87 votes. Romney, Huckabee, and Hunter spoke at the convention.

We here at The Shot joke around about straw polls and question their importance, legitimacy, and ability to measure primary voter support.  However, Greenville County is the most important SC county during a primary because it consistently turns out more voters than every other county.

Whether or not this poll truly measures Romney and Huckabee’s primary support, it does show one factor – both Romney and Huckabee showed strong ground game today in South Carolina’s most important county.

It’s also important to point out that earlier this week we learned that McCain is paying State Senator Mike Fair $7000 for “Get Out The Vote Consulting.”  It looks like Fair was only able to turn out 17 folks to vote. We guess he’s a pretty bad investment.

This straw poll is a very bad sign for John McCain.

441 Votes cast.

Romney – 132
Huckabee – 111
Hunter – 87
Giuliani - 35
Brownback 19
McCain 17
Cox 10
Tancredo 5
T. Thompson 3
Gilmore 1
Paul 1

I thought I heard them say Tommy Thompson, not Fred Thompson. I think Tommy was actually on the ballot, but Fred was not. Anyone else know for sure?

  2. 2 Upstate

You are right. Fred Thompson was not on the ballot. It was Tommy Thompson.

It’s not surprising to see Romney’s upstate straw poll win, given the energy and vitality of his organization’s grassroots campaign efforts. A year ago, I would have thought McCain almost unstoppable nationally, and the front runner in South Carolina. How things have changed!

By the way, I see that The Chaser was mentioned in today’s headline Salon article on South Carolina politics that focuses on straw polls and rough tactics.

Does anyone know was the straw poll conducted?
Was there security in place or did they just pass out something to everyone standing around?
