It’s amazing how deaf politicians like Lindsey Graham can become to the outcry of their constituents once they live in Washington for a few years.

I knew it! Absolutely no one I spoke with supported this travisty of an amnesty bill. Also, most do not think this attitude of “well there are just too many to deport them all” is the right attitude. You do that one bus load at a time, starting with those who have a brush with the law, and who are not working at regular jobs, etc, then on a case by case basis, ID those that remain as UD’s (undocumented aliens). Those without documentation or who failed to report in ——deport immediately.

What a farce. This is no poll. There’s no methodology whatsoever.
DeMint should be ashmaed of himself.
Graham is a statesman trying to find workable solutions.
    DeMint is a politician, pandering.

All I can see with this Immigration debate is Senator DeMint further fueling the fires of racism in our state for political gain. All he has to say is “Illegal Immigrant” and people think that every illegal immigrant is a terrorist, or a criminal, or some other kind of undesirable person. The overwhelming majority of people who live in this country illegally are here because conditions in their home nation are so bad that they and their families would starve if they didn’t come here to work.
What’s worse, Senator DeMint is deliberately misrepresenting this immigration bill. Nowhere does it call for Amnesty. Amnesty is openly declaring that all illegal immigrants are citizens, with no strings attached. This bill provides a path to citizenship while imposing penalties. It has been said that this allows people to just ‘pay-up’ for their ‘crimes’. I will tell you right now that I have done something similar. When I was caught speeding down the highway, I had to pay $200 to the county. Which is more dangerous, a person fleeing to this country seeking work and a new life, or me driving down the highway like a maniac?(or a certain Lt. Governor, for that matter)
What’s important about it is that it provides incentive for these people to come forward and register themselves. Previously undocumented people would have a reason to come forward.
Let’s also not forget about the fact that under this bill, None of that can even occur until the border is secured. This bill would take care of the problem by stopping the current flow of illegals, dealing with those who are already here, and providing easier means for people to become citizens. But you won’t hear Senator DeMint say any of that. All he has to say is ‘Amnesty’, and people immediately jump to conclusions and make gross assumptions.
For two centuries, this nation has served as a sanctuary for people to flee from oppression and seek a better life. Thanks to Senator DeMint, those days are over. We will have a new America, for Americans only, and no one else need apply.

    Mr. Bullock,

It’s disappointing that you and many other supporters of the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill have resorted to flouting the ‘race card,’ engaging in ad hominem attacks, and quibbling over the meaning of “amnesty.” Rather than addressing the substantive problems that many conservatives have with this legislation, many Republicans sadly have embraced rhetoric much more befitting of the Left.

Most conservatives agree that LEGAL immigration enriches and enlivens our nation’s citizenry. Illegal immigration, however, cheapens the meaning of citizenship and conveys an open contempt for the rule of law. This flagrant rule-breaking should not be rewarded with citizenship under any circumstances.
