SCFRW Conducts Presidential Straw Poll at Quarterly Board Meeting
On Saturday, June 9, 2007, the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women held their quarterly board meeting at the Radisson in Columbia. During the early portion of the meeting a presidential straw poll was conducted. Only full members of SCFRW (a local club member) were allowed to cast a ballot. 19 clubs representing the Coast, Low Country, Midlands, and Upstate participated, with the women activists ranging in age from 18-75. The results were as follows:
Mitt Romney: 29
Fred Thompson: 9
John McCain: 8
Rudy Giuliani: 7
Mike Huckabee: 6
Duncan Hunter: 3
Newt Gingrich: 2
Other candidates whose name were on the ballots received 0 votes:
Sam Brownback, John Cox, Jim Gilmore, Ron Paul, Tommy Thompson, and Condi Rice (who was on the ballot under “other”).
The poll was taken before the candidates’ surrogates spoke, and no candidate was in attendance.
The poll was taken to give a good indication of strong Republican women activist opinion from around the state.
Also, during the board meeting, the ladies elected 7 delegates at large and 3 alternates at large for the NFRW convention to be held in Palm Springs, CA in September.
Dear Chaser:
I appreciate the humor and the PR for our group, but I do feel obligated to comment on the stereotypical humor.
While the “sMitten” and “debonair” comments are “cute,” they really do not accurately reflect the straw poll results either for Governor Romney or for our incredible Republican women who are well-informed, highly organized, and the best campaign workers for their candidates, which is why I am sure Governor Romney will be excited about his big win in this straw poll. I believe in the 87 years now that women have had suffrage in this country, we have moved beyond voting for someone–male or female–because of their good looks, regardless of what the national media may say.
The key of this straw poll is that we are looking at Republican women activists in a state where 54% of the voting electorate is women, and the Republicans are quite in the majority. Republican women activists are the ones who will be putting out the signs, making the phone calls, organizing events, doing the door-to-door and one-on-one chats with their neighbors in support of their candidates, actively leading and participating in several presidential campaigns, and strongly involved with the primary itself. This poll represented a good cross-section of the strongest Republican women activists around–the SCFRW!
Sorry if I offended you. I was just trying to have a little fun.
I realize that your organization truly does help our party. And that every person who voted in that straw poll did so because they believe the person they voted for is right on the ISSUES, not because they a good looking.
This was an important straw poll, and I’m sure the Romney Campaign was glad to have this win.
